The Golf Course in a Nutshell

From the lingo to the equipment, many people find trying to start playing golf actually intimidating. Putt, fairway, dogleg and whatnot, those are just a fraction of the words you would often hear from regular golfers, and as alienated as they sound, they’re not really so hard to understand. It just takes some getting used to.

Golf clubsOne of the aspects which really catch the attention of not only those delved into golf, not only those interested to learn golf, but practically anybody who appreciates good landscaping, is the area in which the sport is conducted: the golf course.

A golf course is more often than not a calming, mind-soothing plain field with neatly lawn grasses. It consists of holes, each having a teeing ground, rough, fairway and hazards.

Teeing ground, tee box, or simply tee, is the area at the beginning of the hole from which the player’s first stroke is taken. After the first hit, the ball is now hit from where it landed. The area between the tee box and the putting green where the grass is nicely cut is called the fairway.

The rough on the other hand is the area where the grass is taller and a bit more uneven than the fairway. In short, the fairway is the advantageous area and technically, it is normal for the player to aim at landing the ball in the said part. The rough on the other hand is the complete opposite of it.

The quality of the grasses affect how the ball rolls, and the ability of the player to “take a divot”, or the ability to hit the turf and remove portion of it as the club arcs. Good golf clubs are an advantage at this point, but that is if you know well enough how to steer it. As beginners however, specific golf clubs are recommended instead of top-notch high-end ones, as the latter tends to become a problem when you are just trying to learn the sport.

Often, the holes are designed to be on the line-of-sight from the tee box, but that is not always the case, as it may bend to the left or to the right. This course is called dogleg. If it curves to the right, then it is dogleg right; to the left, it is dogleg left.

Sometimes, for added excitement or headache, the direction bends twice, in which case it will be called double dogleg.

Hazards on golf courses come in two forms: water hazards like ponds and lakes, and; bunkers or sands. There are specific rules applying to these hazards as to whether or not the ball can be hit from that point, or what happens when the ball reaches such hazard.

Golf-clubsPutting green, or simply green, is the area surrounding the hole. The grass on this part is especially nice, so it provides players’ high precision as it is the ground closest to the cup. To putt means to stroke within the green using a putter club, which technically has very low loft that provides more control over the ball, with the hopes of it rolling smoothly over the surface and into the hole. That suggests that in playing golf, several golf clubs are often necessary.

Golf courses look basic on the surface, but it is actually more complex than how it looks. So whether you are trying to be the next big thing in the golf world, or simply looking for a serene out-of-town getaway, then might as well pick your golf clubs now and head on for what could be a real treat to yourself.
